Your Body is 66% Water.... What Color is Your PEE?

I really used to underestimate water. It was such a pain in the butt to try and drink throughout the day. Once I started creating the habit of having my BPA free water bottle with me and drinking all day, my body loved it. Clear skin, little bloat and a happy digestive track. Read why YOU should drink more water!

Did you know the human body  is basically 2/3 water? Without it, one could die in only 4 days! In normal circumstances, in 24 hours we lose 1.5 quarts of water in urine, skin, breath and poop. Drinking 1.5 quarts of water a day is really a good goal and drinking this much is great for the kidneys because toxins, both generated by the body and ones consumed are eliminated via kidneys. Drinking more than you need which is around 1.8 to 2 quarts (for the average person) in normal circumstances, IS NOT better for you and may actually be WORSE. This is why... TOO MUCH water taxes the kidneys and can lead to "over" hydration.

What happens if you don't get enough?

Water has many roles throughout the body other than flushing the kidneys. Water dissolves minerals, acts as a delivery system, lubricates and regulates temperature. Even mild dehydration can lead to constipation, headaches, lethargy, and mental confusion, while increasing the risk of UTI and kidney stones. The thirst mechanism kicks in when we have lost 1 and 2% of body water, however the thirst reflex is often mistaken for hunger! Interesting! Make sure you get your 6-8 glasses per day babes!

How to tell how much water YOU need.

So, we went over the thirst reflex, but always being thirsty can mean something else! The two most common reasons other than dehydration are blood sugar problems and essential fat deficiency. People with diabetes or borderline diabetes are often thirsty. This is because their blood sugar levels are too high, in these cases, the body wants to dilute glucose in the blood. This is why very sweet drinks and sodas tend to make you want to drink MORE...hmmmm, righhttt?
The other reason for thirst is essential fat deficiency. Many people, especially kids, are deficient in essential fats from fish and seeds and their oils. Without the right fats, cells cannot maintain there water balances.

Clear or colored pee?

The other way to tell whether you need to drink more is by checking the color of your urine. If your urine is very strongly colored, then you're not drinking enough. This simple gauge is, however, complicated by the fact that vitamins especially riboflavin or b6 makes the urine fluorescent yellow. This is different from dark yellow, but you will see the difference. Ideally, your urine should be a light straw colored yellow. If your urine is clear, like water, you may be drinking too much and not taking in enough nutrients

What about tea and coffee?

Caffeine does cause a loss of water, but only a fraction of what adding by drinking the beverage itself. Regular coffee and tea drinkers become accustomed to caffeine and lose little fluid. Don't think though for a second that you can replace your daily consumption with coffee or tea alone! Still drink your filtered waters bcuz drinking too much of any coffee/tea/milk/sodas/rockstars etc disrupt your blood sugars.
